Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Captures weekend box office

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" opened with $54 million to capture the weekend's top spot in it's first weekend, according to studio estimates. Propelled by strong reviews and an aggressive ad campaign by 20th Century Fox, Apes did about $14 million more than projected. The movie earned recommendations from 81% of the nation's critics, a high percentage for an August action film. Fans were even more positive: 89% said they would recommend the movie.

College Football - USA Today Coaches Poll Released

You know we must be getting close to the start of the college football season when the preseason rankings start getting released. This has got to be my favorite time of the year, it's still summer and the weather is nice (although here in California it's almost always nice) and we are on the verge of my favorite sport, college football! These rankings need to be taken with a grain of salt, not a game has been played and in reality, these polls set the playing field to the advantage of certain teams. If you don't start the season highly ranked, it will take a minor miracle to get into the BCS title game hunt. Still, it is fun to debate and argue the merits of these polls, which is one of the things that make college football the greatest sport there is (in my humble opinion). I'll have additional thoughts on this poll, but at first glance, I can't argue with Oklahoma at #1, I saw them first hand in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl handle my UConn Huskies. But, I find it slightly ridiculous that West Virginia is not ranked in this poll. Mark my words, that team will be explosive this year (can't wait for LSU to visit Morgantown early in the season!). And what's with all the ACC love? I'll put more stock in the first AP Rankings anyway.....

UConn, Calhoun join elite company with 3rd NCAA Title

The UConn Huskies stormed past Butler in the second half on Monday night and cruised to a 53-41 victory before 70,376 in Houston to capture their 3rd NCAA Basketball Championship. Kemba Walker led the Huskies with 16 points capping a remarkable season for the star guard. With the win, UConn joins only a handful of schools with 3 or more championships. Coach Jim Calhoun is the oldest coach to ever win a title and joins an elite group of 5 coaches with 3 or more titles, the other legendary coaches on the list are Coach K, Rupp, Wooden and Knight.

Eddie Vedder announces Summer Solo tour

Iconic Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will be hitting the road solo this summer in support of his upcoming new album, "Ukulele Songs." The North American trek begins June 15 in Providence, R.I. and wraps up in Vedder's adopted hometown of Seattle, Wash., with a show on July 15 at Benaroya Hall. UConn continues amazing roll into Final 4

UConn won the NCAA West Regionals for the 4th time and head to their fourth Final 4 as they beat Arizona 65-63 in Anaheim on Saturday. I was in attendance and it was an intense, hotly contested game from beginning to end. The Honda Center was overwhelmingly full of Arizona fans, but the few thousand UConn fans there made sure to make their presence felt. Kemba Walker once again outshone all others, with a good deal of help from quickly rising freshman Jeremy Lamb. UConn will continue it's amazing run, which began with 5 victories in 5 days to win the Big East tournament, as they head to Houston to meet the winner of Kentucky/North Carolina. Jim Calhoun and his Huskies are on the verge of their 3rd NCAA Championship, all the more impressive when you consider the four Final 4's and 2 Championships have all been in the last 12 years.

UConn runs to Big East Tourney Championship Game

The UConn Huskies behind the electrifying Kemba Walker, outlasted Syracuse in OT Friday night in a packed Madison Square Garden 76-71. With the victory, UConn continues their improbable tournament run Saturday night against Louisville in the Big East Tournament Championship game. Walker's stat line... 33 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. If you watched the game, he was clearly the best player on the court, as he is the best player in the Big East and all of college basketball. With all due respect to Ben Hansbrough of Notre Dame who won the league's Player of the Year, but he is not in the same class as Kemba Walker. And as great a player as Jimmer Fredette of BYU is, he is not close to being the all around player that Walker is. Fredette, whom many believe will win National Player of the Year honors, is a scorer, that's it. It would be hard to imagine him putting together a stat line like the one Walker put up on Friday. Not to mention that BYU plays in the MWC Conference, which is not in the same league as the Big East and the conversation ends there. Player of the Year debates are out of Walker's hands, all he can control is what happens on the court, and his Huskies are flexing their muscle. They entered the Big East tournament as a most likely #5 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tourney, now they are looking at a #4 seed and possible a #3 seed with a win tonight. Not to mention the fact that if thy win the Big East tournament, that will tie them with Georgetown as most tournament championships all time at 7. Here's to a great game tonight in the basketball mecca of the world, New York City, under the lights in the Worlds Most Famous Arena, Madison Sqauare Garden. We'll witness two of the great coaches in college basketball facing off, Jim Calhoun against Rick Pitino for the most prestigious conference tournament championship and the transcedent Kemba Walker playing in his home city in front of a packed house sure to add to his growing legend.

Big East dominates college basketball

Sorry SEC, now that it's basketball season there is a new dominant conference.... the Big East. If there was any doubt as to the dominance of the Big East over the rest of college basketball, one would only need to point to St. Johns 93-78 trouncing of Duke on Sunday. The fact that a 12-8 St. Johns team struggling to avoid the Big East basement was able to easily handle the ACC leading, defending national champion #3 Blue Devils, should squash anyone doubting the power of the Big East. There is no doubt that not only is the Big East vastly superior to the ACC, but the Big East is the unquestioned dominant conference in the land.

Just as soon as this new Poll came out, Kemba Walker and #8 UConn won a thriller over #7 Villanova 61-59 at Gampel Pavilion. National Player of the Year candidate Walker sealed the win with a floater in the lane with just over 2 seconds left in the game. And for all you Big East bashers out there who love to pile on the league during football season.... well, the Big East has 9 teams in the top 25... 9 ... Is there any doubt what league dominates college basketball?

Fiesta Bowl 1/1/11 - UConn vs. Oklahoma

I experienced this game firsthand. As a lifelong UConn fan living in Southern California, I felt compelled to make the 5 hour drive to Phoenix to support my Huskies. And I more than glad that I did, what a fantastic experience. Just seeing the Huskies in a BCS game was surreal as they have only been on the FBS level for a short time. Seeing them take the field against mighty Oklahoma was icing on the cake. Watching the "Sooner Schooner" burst on the field was something to behold. Despite the 48-20 final score, this was far from being an Oklahoma rout. UConn trailed only 20-10 at halftime and 34-20 in the 4th quarter with the ball. Two late pick 6's by the Sooners as UConn attempted to rally, sealed the deal and led to the misleading final score. University of Phoenix stadium is one beautiful football stadium and the Fiesta Bowl folks put on one hell of a bowl game. Here is hoping that UConn finds themselves in another BCS game sooner rather than later.

Big East screwed in Week 10 polls

The AP Poll, USA Today Coaches Poll and BCS Standings have one common theme this week, no love for the Big East. That beleaguered league has received no respect from the major polls all season long. Can you tell me why #15 Pitt dropped out of the rankings completely in week 1 following an overtime loss at current #5 Utah, widely accepted as one of the most hostile road enviroments in all of college football?? Makes no sense, yet Va. Tech is ranked, you know the same Hokies who lost to FCS James Madison. Florida State loses to unranked NC State this week and not only stays in the polls but is joined by the team that beat them??? Yet, no Pittsburgh, now 3-0 in the Big East. No Syracuse, now 6-2 overall and one of the biggest turnaround stories this season. Talk about bias against the Big East and hypocricy at its finest. Being a Big East honk (born & raised in Ct.) and a Pac 10 homer (lived in Los Angeles since '94), here's hoping the Big East champion thumps whomever it plays in its BCS Bowl and Oregon runs all the way to the BCS Championship.

Initial BCS standings released

Let the controversy begin! The initial BCS standings for this season have been released. Oklahoma sits atop the standings at #1, which may surprise some people as they have not looked especially dominant so far this season. Whether you are a proponent of a playoff system or in favor of the BCS, there is NO denying that college football has THE best regular season in all of sports. Already on ESPN, there are heated debates about these standings. Some question why the non AQ teams, Boise St and TCU are not higher. In my opinion, Boise St. & TCU are too high, their schedules in the WAC & MWC are a joke compared to Oklahoma's Big 12 schedule, Oregon's PAC 10 schedule and Auburn and LSU's SEC schedule.

TCU to Big East? Hopefully....

Rumors that the Big East conference is targeting TCU as a potential new member are beginning to gain serious traction. Reports began to surface earlier this week and by mid-week non denail denials were being issued on both sides as well as talk that the two sides had actually met to discuss.

As a lifelong fan of the Big East, i'm all in favor of such a move and have actually thought TCU would be a great addition to the league for quite some time now. They have become a perennial top 5/top 10 caliber team under Gary Patterson the last several years. The Big East has long been in need of another strong football program to bolster the football side of the conference. The dismal showing by the league thus far in the early season underscores that fact. Not to mention that adding TCU would increase the football teams to 9 and solve the scheduling headaches that an 8 football team league presents. Whether TCU would join as a full member or just in football remains to be seen. Remember, the Big East boasts 16 basketball schools and stands as THE elite hoops conference in all the land (sorry ACC). Critics of TCU joining the Big East are quick to point out that a Texas school hardly belongs in the Big East. However, upon closer inspection, travel distance to most Big East schools would be the same as it is for TCU traveling to far flung MWC schools. Did Texas in the Pac 10 or Big 10 make sense? No, but it almost happened. How about BC in the ACC? I could go on and on..... Throw in the fact the the Big East has an automatic bid into the big money BCS bowls, something that the MWC does not posess (and most likely never will with BYU and Utah bolting for greener pastures) and the TCU/Big East marriage seems all the more realistic.

It would be a win win for both sides and would help the Big East improve its tarnished football image, add a huge TV market for a potential Big East Network, open up fertile Texas recruiting grounds to the league and most of all... fend off potential raids by rival leagues down the line. Here's hoping TCU joins the Big East sooner rather than later.

Thoughts on College Football, Conference Rivalries....

As regular readers of this blog know, I am a college football junkie. To me, it's the greatest sport in the world hands down. After watching a full Saturday slate of college football, NFL Sundays are a huge letdown. The NFL may be football played at a higher level, but it cannot come close to college football's tradition, pagaentry, spectacle, passion & intensity. College football has rivalries that span over 100 years, involve in state rivals, entire regions of the country, conferences and neighboring states. Families are raised on a particular team and it is passed down from generation to generation. NFL stadiums are antiseptic corportate boxes that average around 60,000. College football is played in historic stadiums, some that seat 100,000 rabid fans and up.

Speaking of conference rivalries, as someone that was born & raised in the Northeast and spent most of my adult life on the West Coast, I lean towards the Big East and PAC 10. Both of which get overshadowed by the other conferences. How does this relate to this week's AP poll? How the heck does West Virginia drop a spot after dominating Maryland on Saturday? How does Pitt, after losing on the road by a field goal at current #13 Utah (one of college football's most intimidating home fields) drop from #15 out of the Poll completely in week 1? Bias against the Big East, that's how. Year after year, the Big East gets bashed. You'd think that after suriving the raid by the ACC earlier this decade and seeing WVU beat the almighty SEC's Georgia in the 2005 Sugar Bowl in Atlanta and beating down highly touted Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, people would give the conference a break. Not to mention, Louisville's '06 Orange Bowl win over the ACC's Wake Forest. These BCS bowl wins (compared to the ACC's pathetic BCS bowl record) ought too be enough to give the Big East the benefit of the doubt when they have a down year.

Weekend highlights included College Football's "Monster Saturday" which featured an usual amount of early season high profile games involving traditional powers. While it may not have lived up to the hype (many of the games were lopsided), it did help to bring some clarity to the landscape. Alabama and Ohio State look awfully tough so far this young season. Elsewhere, the almighty NFL returned on Sunday to the delight of fans nationwide. And last but certainly not least, Kevin Durant led a talnted but unheralded group of young NBA stars to the FIBA 2010 World Championships of Basketball. The USA last won Gold in this event in 1994 and won Bronze in 2006. This should hopefully put to rest all the nonsecial debate about who the dominant basketball country in the world is. The USA now boasts the 2008 Olympic Gold and the FIBA 2010 World Championship Gold.

Ok, as promised, here are some quick thoughts on who is undervalued and overvalued in the initial AP poll of the season.

Overrated - Nebraska (good, not that good), Iowa (last season was a fluke), Va Tech (too high), Oregon (no Massoli), ACC (enough said), Florida (no Tebow), Boise St. (weak schedule), Oregon St. (not top 25), LSU (weaker every year without Saban), Penn State (not top 25)

Underrated - Big East (tough 1-6), USC (elite talent, may win Pac 10 and AP title), Pitt (loaded with Dion Lewis, Greg Romeus and Jon Baldwin), West Virginia (loaded with Noel Devine & co. to go with solid D), UConn (great coach in Edsall, great running game with Todman, great D with Wilson & Lutrus), Cincinnati (great QB in Collaros, elite receiving corps led by Binns and Hazelton), Auburn (solid D, great offensive scheme), Stanford (great QB in Luck), Washington (Locker's senior swan song)

The initial AP Poll of the Season has been released, signifying that the start of College Football is right around the corner. As expected, defending BCS Champion Alabama starts the season #1. The top 5, Alabama, Ohio State, Boise State, Florida and Texas – are the same teams that finished in the top 5 at the end of last season, and that make up the top 5 in the Coaches' poll. 7 teams (No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 11 Oregon, No. 12 Wisconsin, No 15 Pittsburgh, No. 18 North Carolina, No. 20 Florida State and No. 25 West Virginia) land in the same position in the AP and Coaches' polls. Conference breakdown: Big 12 places the most teams in the AP's top 10 (3), the ACC places the most in the top 20 (5) and the SEC has the most in the entire poll (6), due to LSU, Auburn and Georgia coming in at Nos. 21, 22 and 23. At first glance, it seems the Big East has a valid gripe as Cincinnati and UConn are legit top 25 teams. I'll have additional thoughts on the poll, who's ranked too high, too low, or is missing altogether, stay tuned.

Lakers victory parade caps off victorious season

The 2010 NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers celebrated their repeat championship Monday in Los Angeles with a victory parade. Hundreds of thousands of euphoric Laker fans lined the streets surrounding Staples Center hoping to get a glimpse of their favorite player and share in the jubilation of the franchise's 16th NBA Championship. Despite the excitement surrounding their Finals victory over the Boston Celtics, talk is quickly turning towards their attempt at a "three-peat" next season. Most of the team, including core players Kobe Bryant, Paul Gasol, Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest & Lamar Odom returns intact, with the exception of a few free agents. Most notable among those being Derek Fisher who has voiced his desire to return and finish his career as a Laker. Coach Phil Jackson, who now lays claim to a record 11 NBA titles, is still debating whether he will return for another season.

Team USA earns "Redemption" with Olympic Gold

Culminating a three year mission to end years of international frustration, the U.S. "Redeem Team" survived a huge challenge from Spain, winning 118-107 in the 2008 Olympic Gold Medal Basketball game. Order has now been restored in international basketball. After overwhelming everyone for seven games, the Americans led by only four points with under 2 1/2 minutes to play. Then, they proved they could handle a close game that it seemed would never come in Beijing. Their prize.... the first U.S. gold medal since the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat scored 27 points for the Americans, who found a much gamer Spanish team than the one they humiliated by 37 points earlier in the tournament. NBA MVP Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers added 20 clutch points and led the team with 6 assists. The Americans had too much offense down the stretch. Bryant converted a clutch four point play with 3:10 remaining, holding his finger to his lips to quiet the rowdy Spanish crowd behind the basket. Wade added another 3 pointer that made it 111-104 with just over 2 minutes left, and only then could the Americans relax a little. They began to celebrate during a break after some technical fouls on Spain with 26 seconds left, then partied at midcourt when it was over with “Born in the USA” blaring over the arena’s speakers. Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trail Blazers scored 22 points and Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers had 21 for the Spanish, the reigning world champions who were hoping to win their first Olympic gold. Now, here's hoping that USA Basketball can keep the core of this group together for the 2010 World Championships in Istanbul and the 2012 Olympics in London. If they can, this team may be able to shed it's "Redeem Team" moniker and fulfill the illustrious "Dream Team" legacy.

The USA Men's Basketball team aka the "Redeem Team" just concluded a very successful few days that saw them rout the 2 teams considered their biggest rivals for the Gold Medal at the Olympics. First, they earned a bit of redemption by blowing out Greece 92-69, avenging their lone loss at the 2006 World Basketball Championships. Los Angeles Lakers guard and NBA MVP Kobe Bryant led the way with 18 points, Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh also had 18, Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat had 17 points, six steals and five assists and Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. Next, they blew the defending world basketball champions Spain off the court 119-82. It was the US team's 4th straight win, widest margin of victory yet and secured the #1 seed in group A for the Quarterfinals. Lebron James led the way with 18 points, eight assists, five rebounds and four steals, Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets scored 16 points and had six rebounds; and Dwyane Wade added 16 points and six rebounds, Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets recorded 14 points dished out eight assists, had five steals and five rebounds. Kobe Bryant added 11 as did Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz. Next up for the US is a meaningless game against Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks and Germany on Monday 8/18. Then the real fun begins as the Quarterfinals (single elimination) get under way. One thing is clear after watching the "Redeem Team" dominate Greece and Spain, if they keeping playing this way.... redemption for USA Basketball is close at hand.

Team USA's "Redeem Team" (2-0 in the Olympics) faces Greece Thursday, the team that stunned them two years ago in the semifinals of the world championship. The Greeks are physical, and they should provide the first test of these games for the United States. After the Greece game Thursday, the Americans face world champion Spain, who are also 2-0 after rallying to beat China in overtime. What's become clear thus far is that even though Team USA boasts a roster featuring Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, etc... they have displayed a lack of outside shooting, poor free throw shooting and inconsistent defensive intensity. These weaknesses were easily overcome against inferior competition. But against the elite international teams such as Spain, Greece and Argentina..... Team USA will have to play their A game if they hope to recapture the gold and truly redeem USA basketball.

The rock icon, who spent time in rehab last year, has been in media headlines the last few weeks because his ex-wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, is making the rounds to promote her new tell-all memoir. Iconic Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will embark on his first solo tour this spring, on the heels of his soundtrack to the acclaimed film "Into the Wild." Dates begin April 2 in Vancouver; Liam Finn will open. Vedder's "Into the Wild" soundtrack has sold 243,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Lakers return home from successful road trip

The Los Angeles Lakers just capped off a very successful 9 game road trip (longest in team history) with an impressive 7-2 record that puts them at 35-17 overall. They make their Los Angeles return and Pau Gasol makes his Staples Center debut on Feb. 19th. However, there is some slightly worrisome news, as Kobe Bryant has re-injured the already bothersome pinky on his shooting hand. Kobe has opted to put off surgery, which could sideline him up to six weeks, until after the season and the Olympics this summer. The Los Angeles Lakers have just announced they have acquired All Star Forward Pau Gasol (and a 2010 2nd round draft pick) from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie and the draft rights to Pau's brother Marc Gasol (plus 2008 & 2010 1st round draft picks). The move appears to be the Lakers attempt to continue to build on this seasons early success and avoiding a letdown (similar to last season) following Andrew Bynum's injury which will keep him out at least another 5 weeks or so. The arrival of Gasol, even in Bynum's absence, should be enough to keep the Lakers in contention in the Western Conference. Once Bynum does return, the Lakers will then have a very formidable lineup of Andrew Bynum at Center, Pau Gasol at Power Forward, Lamar Odom at Small Forward, Kobe Bryant at Shooting Guard and Derek Fisher at Point Guard. And then there's this week's Billboard story, which says that Weiland's Velvet Revolver bandmate Slash claimed the singer will rejoin his former bandmates in Stone Temple Pilots for a handful of summer reunion shows this summer. According to MTV News, negotiations are still ongoing, but it's looking very likely that Stone Temple Pilots will be coming to a town near you this summer. Bowl Season almost here

For College Football fans, there is no better time of year.... The season enters it's stretch run, Rivalry Saturday and Conference Championship games are coming up and Bowl Season is right around the corner. Teams are battling for position in the BCS standings, with the top 2 teams on 12/2 earning the chance to play in the BCS National Championship Game @ Louisiana Superdome New Orleans 1/7/08. The 2 most likely participants are #1 LSU and #2 Oregon. However, #3 Kansas is undefeated and if it wins out, would likely leapfrog Oregon into the #2 spot. The argument against Kansas is that they haven't played anyone, that argument loses steam as they face #5 Missouri on 11/24 and possibly #4 Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship 12/1 @ San Antonio Alamodome. Winning those 2 games, finishing the season undefeated and winning the Big 12, should be enough to get the Jayhawks into the Championship. But, it will be VERY tough for them to finish without a loss. LSU would need to do it's part by winning out and winning the SEC Championship 12/1 @ Atlanta Georgia Dome. Oregon, would need to beat Arizona & UCLA on the road and beat in state rival Oregon State in order to stay in the running. All the offseason drama and doom and gloom regarding the Lakers has fallen by the wayside as the purple and gold have gotten off to a promising 2-1 start to the new season. Even more surprising is that it's not the result of superhuman efforts by Kobe Bryant. Their fast start is due to the much improved play of youngsters Andrew Bynum and Jordan Farmar, the inspired play of Ronny Turiaf, the savvy veteran leadership of Derek Fisher, the deft passing of Luke Walton and the sharp shooting of Vladmir Radmonovic and Sasha Vujacic. Yes, the much maligned supporting cast that Kobe had seemingly thrown under the bus, has stepped up and proven itself capable in this young season. All this without the injured Lamar Odom (due back shortly). As for Kobe, he is still playing at his normal superstar level. What is most impressive about his performance so far has been how well rounded it has been. He has scored when needed, set up his teammates and played exceptional & inspired defense. Led Zeppelin reschedules reunion show

Rock legends Led Zeppelin have rescheduled their highly anticipated reunion concert from November 26 to December 10 in London, due to guitarist Jimmy Page breaking his finger. Page will not be able to play guitar for three weeks while he recovers. Led Zeppelin split in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham and last took the stage 12 years ago at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The concert venue holds 20,000 fans and many die-hard Zeppelin fans had organized trips from around the world to attend the concert this month. Tickets were allocated by ballot and more than 1 million fans registered for a chance to see the legendary rock group. Page will be joined by singer Robert Plant and bassist John Paul Jones, and Bonham's son Jason Bonham will be the drummer. The show will be a tribute to the late founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the group in 1968.

Just when the ongoing soap opera that is the Los Angeles Lakers seemed to be quieting down, a new wrinkle has emerged. Longtime Lakers owner Jerry Buss, during his annual training camp interviews, revealed that he will continue to entertain all reasonable trade offers for disgruntled Kobe Bryant. This news comes as Kobe has been quiet as of late and reacquainting himself with his teammates and getting ready for the season. Buss did however stress that it would take quite a bit for him to even consider parting with Kobe. He also said that he hopes that a successful Lakers season will go a long way towards smoothing the situation over to the point where a trade would not even happen. Kobe, for his part, issued a statement basically amounting to no comment. Considering that Kobe has an opt out in his contract in 2 years and coach Phil Jackson is in the final year of his contract, this upcoming Lakers season figures to be a pivotal one in the history of this storied franchise. Radiohead planning tour

Now that Radiohead has released (Oct. 10) it's long awaited album of new material "In Rainbows" (fans were able to name their own price for the digital download), their is talk of an upcoming tour. Speaking to Rolling Stone, guitarist Jonny Greenwood explained that the band members were discussing the details of forthcoming live dates "[Touring is] exactly what we finally started talking about," he explained. "Now that the album's out, we can get together exactly how and where we're going to tour." Laker fans breathe sigh of relief!

The sound you heard Monday was the majority of Laker Nation breathing a sigh of relief. For what you may ask? The sight of Kobe Bryant in a Lakers jersey smiling at Monday's media day in El Segundo. Up until the moment #24 walked thru the door (albeit 30 minutes late due to a doctor appt.) there was uncertainty surrounding the Lakers star and if he would hold out during training camp. Following another disappointing season/1st round playoff exit, Kobe let loose his frustrations thru the early part of the summer. What followed was a series of bizarre radio interviews in which he demanded/rescinded/reiterated trade demands. He sited the Lakers inability to surround him with the necessary pieces required to compete in the rugged NBA Western Conference. He claimed he was mislead by Lakers owner Jerry Buss when he resigned with the club as a free agent. Bryant claims Buss promised to build a winning team around him immediately. However, upon learning Buss told coach Phil Jackson they were going to be in rebuilding mode, Bryant felt even more betrayed. Everything boiled over with Kobe hearing an "insider" within the Lakers organization pinned the departure of Shaquille O'Neal squarely on his shoulders. Bryant then focused the majority of his summer on Team USA and bringing home the gold at the FIBA Tournament of the America's in Las Vegas and thus qualifying for the 2008 Olympics. What seems apparent following Monday's media day is the summer has helped soothe Kobe's frustration as has the addition of former teammate Derek Fisher as well as the re-signing of Luke Walton and Chris Mihm. For now Kobe is putting on a brave face and saying all the right things. What remains to be seen though, is how long this will last and what happens if the Lakers don't improve this season. Van Halen kicks off tour

One of the more highly anticipated tours of the decade thus far kicked off last night, as rock icons Van Halen took the stage with original singer David Lee Roth for the first time in over 20 years. Reviews of their first show have been universally glowing as the reunited band members played as if the last 20 years never happened. Led Zeppelin ticket demand unprecedented

Demand for Led Zeppelin's reunion concert has crashed the official website. Zeppelin are set to play the 02 Arena in London on November 26. The show is a tribute event for Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The ballot to get one of the 18,000 tickets opened at 4pm but the site crashed within minutes. Promoter Harvey Goldsmith, who is putting on the event, said there was demand from as far afield as Japan, Australia and the United States. He predicted that the gig would cause the "largest demand for one show in history". Due to the unprecedented demand, the registration period was exteneded thru 9/17. Rumors have begun swirling that the remaining members of Zeppelin, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones along with Jason Bonham (son of late drummer John Bonham) have discussed a reunion tour if the concert goes well. Team USA wins FIBA Americas Championship

Team USA buried defending Olympic Champion and #2 team in the world Argentina 118-81 Sunday at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas to win the Gold Medal of the FIBA Tournament of the Americas. #1 ranked USA now qualifies for the 2008 Olympics in China where they will look to improve upon their disappointing Bronze medal finish at the 2004 Olympics. Team USA won by an everage margin of 40 points per game and completely dominated this tournament and were never tested. Argentina was missing some key players, so it is difficult to assess how good this USA team really is. Comparisons to the original 1992 Dream Team that took gold in Barcelona and featured the greatest collection of players ever assembled (Jordan, Bird, Magic, Barkley, Ewing, Malone, Mullin, Robinson, Stockton, Drexler, etc..) have begun. I was on hand to witness this game and can tell you that this current team is awesome. Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Jason Kidd, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudemire and Michael Redd represent the core of this team. They play tenacious defense and employ a truly devastating transition game. They have a tremendous coaching staff in Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski (Duke) and assistants Mike D'Antoni (Phoenix Suns), Jim Boeheim (Syracuse) and Nate McMillan (Portland Trailblazers). Dwyane Wade will almost certainly be added to this roster for the Olympics. Other possible additions include Elton Brand, Gilbert Arenas, Carlos Boozer, Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Shane Battier, Paul Pierce, Joe Johnson, Bruce Bowen, Kirk Hinrich, Chris Bosh and Chris Paul. They will face much tougher teams at the Olympics including a full strength Argentina team along with Spain, Greece, Italy, France, Germany and Serbia among others. Regardless of who is added or removed, as long as they keep the current core intact, this team will be the favorite to take home the Olympic Gold next summer. Once they accomplish that, the comparisons to the original Dream Team will be more valid.

College Football Opening Weekend

For fans of college football, the wait is over! Arguably the greatest spectator sport in America has returned. The opening week/weekend of college football saw plenty of blowouts, especially from the teams atop the rankings. #1 USC, #2 LSU, #3 West Virginia, #4 Florida and #5 Oklahoma all blew out their competition. Cal and Tennessee played and exciting game with Cal ultimately winning. Notre Dame was embarrassed at home by Georgia Tech. And in perhaps the greatest upset in college football history, division 1AA (championship subdivsion) Appalachian State Mountaineers shocked formerly #5 Michigan Wolverines at home. As for Michigan, the Wolverines became the first ranked team from Division I-A, now known as the Bowl Subdivision, to lose to a team from I-AA, now known as the Championship Subdivision. Even though the Mountaineers are the 2 time defending 1AA (championship subdivison) Champions, their unprecedented win over Michigan sent the Wolverines tumbling clear out of the top 25, which is the greatest drop in the rankings by any team...ever. Team USA gears up for FIBA Tournament

Team USA is back in training camp this week in Las Vegas in preparation for the upcoming FIBA Tournament of the America's Championship running from 8/22 thru 9/2 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. At stake is a berth to the Olympics next summer in China. Team USA must finish in 1st or 2nd place to gain an automatic berth into the Olympics. The tournament features 10 national teams from North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. Countries competing include 2004 Olympic gold medal champion Argentina, the 2007 Pan America Games champion Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, host United States, Uruguay and Venezuela. If Team USA fails to finish in one of the top two spots, they will then have one final chance to qualify for the Olympics through another tournament to be held next year.
