College Football Returns!

College Football returned in all it's glory over Labor Day weekend saving sports fans from baseball doldrums and end of summer blues. The sport many claim to be the greatest of them all, showed why in a riveting opening weekend. The most impressive victories may have eminated from a pair of Southern California Pac 10 teams. USC traveled east and put an impressive beating on Virginia of the ACC. And in the Rose Bowl, UCLA, whom not much was expected of in Rick Neuheisel's first year, shocked Tennessee out of the SEC. Other impressive victories were notched by LSU, Florida & Auburn from the SEC, Ohio State out of the Big Ten, Missouri, Texas & Oklahoma out of the Big 12, West Virginia & South Florida out of the Big East. Team USA earns "Redemption" with Olympic Gold

Culminating a three year mission to end years of international frustration, the U.S. "Redeem Team" survived a huge challenge from Spain, winning 118-107 in the 2008 Olympic Gold Medal Basketball game. Order has now been restored in international basketball. After overwhelming everyone for seven games, the Americans led by only four points with under 2 1/2 minutes to play. Then, they proved they could handle a close game that it seemed would never come in Beijing. Their prize.... the first U.S. gold medal since the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat scored 27 points for the Americans, who found a much gamer Spanish team than the one they humiliated by 37 points earlier in the tournament. NBA MVP Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers added 20 clutch points and led the team with 6 assists. The Americans had too much offense down the stretch. Bryant converted a clutch four point play with 3:10 remaining, holding his finger to his lips to quiet the rowdy Spanish crowd behind the basket. Wade added another 3 pointer that made it 111-104 with just over 2 minutes left, and only then could the Americans relax a little. They began to celebrate during a break after some technical fouls on Spain with 26 seconds left, then partied at midcourt when it was over with “Born in the USA” blaring over the arena’s speakers. Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trail Blazers scored 22 points and Pau Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers had 21 for the Spanish, the reigning world champions who were hoping to win their first Olympic gold. Now, here's hoping that USA Basketball can keep the core of this group together for the 2010 World Championships in Istanbul and the 2012 Olympics in London. If they can, this team may be able to shed it's "Redeem Team" moniker and fulfill the illustrious "Dream Team" legacy.

Team USA romps past Greece & Spain at Olympics

The USA Men's Basketball team aka the "Redeem Team" just concluded a very successful few days that saw them rout the 2 teams considered their biggest rivals for the Gold Medal at the Olympics. First, they earned a bit of redemption by blowing out Greece 92-69, avenging their lone loss at the 2006 World Basketball Championships. Los Angeles Lakers guard and NBA MVP Kobe Bryant led the way with 18 points, Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh also had 18, Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat had 17 points, six steals and five assists and Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists. Next, they blew the defending world basketball champions Spain off the court 119-82. It was the US team's 4th straight win, widest margin of victory yet and secured the #1 seed in group A for the Quarterfinals. Lebron James led the way with 18 points, eight assists, five rebounds and four steals, Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets scored 16 points and had six rebounds; and Dwyane Wade added 16 points and six rebounds, Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets recorded 14 points dished out eight assists, had five steals and five rebounds. Kobe Bryant added 11 as did Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz. Next up for the US is a meaningless game against Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks and Germany on Monday 8/18. Then the real fun begins as the Quarterfinals (single elimination) get under way. One thing is clear after watching the "Redeem Team" dominate Greece and Spain, if they keeping playing this way.... redemption for USA Basketball is close at hand.

Team USA's "Redeem Team" faces test against Greece

Team USA's "Redeem Team" (2-0 in the Olympics) faces Greece Thursday, the team that stunned them two years ago in the semifinals of the world championship. The Greeks are physical, and they should provide the first test of these games for the United States. After the Greece game Thursday, the Americans face world champion Spain, who are also 2-0 after rallying to beat China in overtime. What's become clear thus far is that even though Team USA boasts a roster featuring Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, etc... they have displayed a lack of outside shooting, poor free throw shooting and inconsistent defensive intensity. These weaknesses were easily overcome against inferior competition. But against the elite international teams such as Spain, Greece and Argentina..... Team USA will have to play their A game if they hope to recapture the gold and truly redeem USA basketball.

Brett Favre to start on Saturday for New York Jets

New York Jets coach Eric Mangini said Brett Favre will start next Saturday against the Washington Redskins in the team's NFL pre-season home opener. If Favre's first practice was any indication, get ready for a frenzied atmosphere for a largely meaningless game. More than 7,000 fans packed the club's practice facility in Long Island to catch a glimpse of the iconic quarterback in his first appearance on a field with New York. Favre was acquired from Green Bay Packers, sending a jolt through the franchise and the rest of the NFL. For New York Jets tickets or any NFL tickets, be sure to visit www.TicketRequest.com

Brett Favre at odds with Green Bay Packers

Legendary Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre has apparently decided he wants to unretire and play in the NFL again this season, even if it's on another team. Favre and Packer management are now at odds, with the Packers committed to Aaron Rodgers as the new starting QB. Team officials and the coaching staff are telling Favre and his reps. that he is welcome back, but in a different capacity (as in backup QB). Favre is now on record saying play me or release me. Favre favors an outright release so that he can choose the team he joins. The Packers are refusing to release him and appear willing, albeit reluctant to entertain trade offers for the Packer icon. However, team officials state that thus far no trade offers have been received. In related news, thousands of Packer fans voiced their support for Favre to return outside the stadium. Summer Concert Tours - Early Returns

With the busy summer concert season already in full swing, let's take a look and see how some of the more high profile tours are doing in terms of ticket sales. Both the Bonnaroo festival and Coachella festival fell short of sellouts, tours by Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5 and George Michael are all struggling thus far. Nine Inch Nails and Bruce Springsteen are doing ok but not great business nationwide. However, not all tours are struggling... Coldplay, Tom Petty, Madonna, Jonas Brothers, Radiohead, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, John Mayer, Jimmy Buffett, Vans Warped Tour, Journey/Heart/Cheap Trick, Kenny Chesney and Rascal Flatts are some of the artists that are faring well out on the road. NBA Conference Finals Begin

The NBA version of the Final Four is set and ready to begin this week. Out West, the Los Angeles Lakers led by NBA MVP Kobe Bryant and teammates Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, take on the defending 2007 NBA champion San Antonio Spurs led by Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli. Back East, the 2004 NBA Champion Detroit Pistons led by Richard Hamilton and Chauncy Billups take on the Boston Celtics led by the trio of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. There are several interesting storylines leading up to the NBA Finals. Many fans would love to see the Lakers and Celtics write a new chapter in their storied rivalry, while others envision a rematch of the '04 Finals with the Lakers seeking revenge on the Pistons. And not to be overlooked, the Spurs seek to not only repeat as NBA Champions but to further cement their legacy as a modern day NBA dynasty. Whichever scenario ends up coming to fruition, you can be sure to find the NBA Playoffs tickets, NBA Conference Finals tickets and NBA Finals tickets at www.TicketRequest.com

NBA Playoffs begin as Lakers win opener

The 2008 NBA Playoffs got underway as the #1 seed in the West, the Los Angeles Lakers took command in the third quarter of game 1 and beat the Denver Nuggets 128-114 at Staples Center. The Lakers forward/center Pau Gasol established career playoff highs with 36 points and eight assists, and he also had 16 rebounds and three blocked shots Sunday. Brett Favre retires

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to end his legendary NFL career and retire after 17 record-breaking seasons. The 38-year-old led the Packers to the NFC North Division title last season as he passed for 3,799 meters and 28 touchdowns. During the season he became the league's all-time leader in passing (56 377 meters), touchdown passes (442) and career wins (160). But the magical campaign ended in disappointing fashion in the NFC title game, when the Packers suffered a 23-20 overtime loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The only three-time MVP in NFL history, Favre is the league's all-time leader with 5,377 career completions. A nine-time Pro Bowler, Favre has started 253 consecutive regular-season games for the Packers, a streak that dates to September 27, 1992. Favre led the Packers to a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots in the 1997 Super Bowl, the franchise's first title in 29 years. The MVP in 1995 and 1996 and co-winner of the award in 1997, Favre has five seasons with at least 4,000 passing yards and eight campaigns with at least 30 TDs.

Van Halen tour reportedly not cancelled

Despite reports to the contrary, sources with Van Halen say the band's tour is not being cancelled, though tonight's (March 3) scheduled show at the American Airlines Center in Dallas has been postponed and rescheduled for April 24. Three other dates have been postponed while Eddie Van Halen undergoes medical tests. Stay tuned for new developments.

Van Halen - remaining tour dates cancelled?

The remaining dates of Van Halen's reunion tour have been canceled, TMZ.com is reporting. The tour began in September with popular singer David Lee Roth performing with the band for the first time in 22 years, and Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, playing bass. Although performances were lined up through April 19, TMZ.com cited unnamed sources as saying the band's hotel reservations are being canceled now that the rest of the tour has been scrapped. The band's last three shows were canceled as Eddie Van Halen is said to be having "issues," the report said. The rock icon, who spent time in rehab last year, has been in media headlines the last few weeks because his ex-wife, actress Valerie Bertinelli, is making the rounds to promote her new tell-all memoir. The book discusses her and Van Halen's mutual infidelity and drug use during their more than 20 years of marriage. Representatives for the band could not be reached for comment, TMZ.com said. Stay tuned as we will report as soon as this news is confirmed.

Yao Ming to miss rest of season

Houston Rockets All-Star center Yao Ming is out for the season with a stress fracture in his left foot, a stunning blow to the surging Rockets. Yao was having a terrific season, averaging 22 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. If Yao chooses surgery, it would involve placing screws across the bone to hold it together. The second option would be to treat it with a cast and crutches. Both options involve a healing time of about four months. It is unclear when Yao could play again, but he is not expected to miss the Beijing Olympics in August. The Police return with more U.S. dates

Rock icons, The Police, who last year reunited for what turned out to be 2007's top-grossing tour, have rolled out the itinerary for what they're saying will be their last-ever round of shows together, and have tapped Elvis Costello & The Imposters to occupy the opening slot. The trio plans to launch its final tour May 1, and will spend the remainder of that month hitting about a dozen US cities. A European tour follows in June, and a second batch of US shows is set for July and August, with the group eyeing an Aug. 4 finale at Jones Beach in New York. Keep an eye on www.TicketRequest.com/concerts.html for Police tickets and all Concert tickets to the show of your choice!

Lakers return home from successful road trip

The Los Angeles Lakers just capped off a very successful 9 game road trip (longest in team history) with an impressive 7-2 record that puts them at 35-17 overall. They make their Los Angeles return and Pau Gasol makes his Staples Center debut on Feb. 19th. However, there is some slightly worrisome news, as Kobe Bryant has re-injured the already bothersome pinky on his shooting hand. Kobe has opted to put off surgery, which could sideline him up to six weeks, until after the season and the Olympics this summer. On the positive side, he and the rest of his teammates have the NBA All Star Game break to rest up, recover from injuries and prepare for the 2nd half of the season. In addition, the presence of the newly acquired Gasol continues to offset the loss of injured Andrew Bynum and could also help pickup the slack if Kobe is not 100%. www.TicketRequest.com/sports.html has Lakers tickets and NBA tickets for all games and sections!

Shaquille O'Neal heads to Phoenix

Looks like Shaquille O'Neal will have another shot at an NBA Championship now that he has landed with the Phoenix Suns in a blockbuster trade completed today. O'Neal heads to Phoenix from the Miami Heat in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. Apparently the Suns felt they needed to make a move in response to the Los Angeles Lakers recent trade for Pau Gasol. Lakers get Pau Gasol from Grizzlies!

The Los Angeles Lakers have just announced they have acquired All Star Forward Pau Gasol (and a 2010 2nd round draft pick) from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie and the draft rights to Pau's brother Marc Gasol (plus 2008 & 2010 1st round draft picks). The move appears to be the Lakers attempt to continue to build on this seasons early success and avoiding a letdown (similar to last season) following Andrew Bynum's injury which will keep him out at least another 5 weeks or so. The arrival of Gasol, even in Bynum's absence, should be enough to keep the Lakers in contention in the Western Conference. Once Bynum does return, the Lakers will then have a very formidable lineup of Andrew Bynum at Center, Pau Gasol at Power Forward, Lamar Odom at Small Forward, Kobe Bryant at Shooting Guard and Derek Fisher at Point Guard. That lineup, coupled with strong reserves on the bench (Jordan Farmar, Ronny Turiaf, Sasha Vujacic, Vlad Radmonovic, Luke Walton, Chris Mihm, etc.) will instantly be in contention for the NBA Championship this season and due to the relative youth of the roster, for several seasons to come. If you are looking to catch the new look Lakers at Staples Center, be sure to check www.TicketRequest.com/sports.html

Stone Temple Pilots reunion tour?

90's alt. rockers Stone Temple Pilots are rumored to be in discussions for a one off summer reunion tour. Singer Scott Weiland recently told The Miami Herald that fans should "be on the lookout" for an STP reunion in the coming months. And then there's this week's Billboard story, which says that Weiland's Velvet Revolver bandmate Slash claimed the singer will rejoin his former bandmates in Stone Temple Pilots for a handful of summer reunion shows this summer. According to MTV News, negotiations are still ongoing, but it's looking very likely that Stone Temple Pilots will be coming to a town near you this summer. According to numerous sources close to the band and others who work in various capacities throughout the industry, the reunion tour is on. Some claim venues have already been reserved throughout the country for the trek, and others say they're actively trying to secure their bands opening slots on the proposed run. Fresh on the heel of their celebrated reunion show in London, legendary guitarist and founder Jimmy Page has called for a full fledged Led Zeppelin world tour. Fans of the iconic band have been clamoring for such a tour but thus far nothing has surfaced. However, Page tells Billboard magazine that any tour plans are on hold until at least the fall, when vocalist Robert Plant will finish his ongoing project with bluegrass star Alison Krauss. Waiting for the fall is a small price to pay for the legions of Zeppelin fans across the world who have waited much longer than that for this kind of news. Keep checking back here as we will be sure to keep you posted with Led Zeppelin tour news as it becomes available.

Boxing's Blockbuster Winter/Spring Schedule

Following what has been by all accounts one of the strongest years in Boxing in terms of tremendous matchups and exciting fights, Boxing has an amazing lineup of fights on tap this winter/spring. Super Middleweights Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor meet up for a non title rematch of their tremendous first fight on Feb. 16 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. Heavyweights Wladimir Klitschko and Sultan Ibragimov will meet in a Heavyweight unification bout on Feb. 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Junior Featherweight Israel Vazquez will defend his title against Rafael Marquez in the rubber match of their exciting trilogy on March 1 at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles. Phenom Manny Pacquiao will take on Juan Manuel Marquez in a rematch for the Junior Lightweight title on March 15 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Rising star Miguel Cotto defends his Welterweight title against Alfonso Gomez on April 12 in Atlantic City. Perhaps the most anticipated fight of the year and arguably one of the most sought after fights of the last decade pits legendary Bernard Hopkins against undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe for the Light Heavyweight title on April 19 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Following that, Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya will take on a TBA opponent on May 3rd, either at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles or in Mexico City. As if all that were not enough, De La Hoya is rumored to be taking on Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather in September in a rematch of their first hotly contested record breaking fight. And Kelly Pavlik, following his non title February rematch with Jermain Taylor, is rumored to be defending his title June 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York City against a TBA foe, most likely John Duddy. Once again, the powers that be in Boxing seem to have finally learned their lesson. Whether it is the pressure from UFC or fan outcry, they are setting up the matchups that fans truly want to see and putting Boxing back on the front page.
